Sierra Collection, Juniper I in Madder

Ever wanted to blend the rugged grandeur of a mountain range with a chic commercial setting? Tai Ping did exactly that. The brand’s stunning new Sierra collection beautifully channels the primordial, lore-steeped landscapes of the Sierra Nevada.

Brands, take note: This is a lesson in restraint. While some collections send you down a rabbit hole of endless options, Sierra keeps things refreshingly simple and beautifully focused with just five distinct, hand-knotted patterns. Each stunning design—available in lithic shades of bone, moss, madder, smoke, and sunlit gold—draws inspiration from the region’s granite peaks, towering sequoias, and winding streams fed by snowmelt.

Tundra, the first pattern to emerge from the collection, pays homage to the far north landscapes of the mountain range, where winding paths formed by natural elements snake across the open terrain. Hand-drawn lines flow across the rug’s face in an organic, undulating rhythm. Similar in nature, Serene recedes into the environment through subtle differences in scale and complexity. 

But it’s Juniper I—specifically in the Madder colorway—that simply steals the show with its asymmetrical, mesmerizing aesthetic. “The [sun-baked earth] effect comes from hand-dying by our master dyers in Nepal, who achieve that abrash quality through years of practiced technique,” says Ariana Massouh, U.S. design & product director at Tai Ping. “We were quite deliberate about the color itself—a true sun-baked earth tone—and equally deliberate about the tonal variation within it.” The shifts in color offer a sense of depth that’s difficult to reproduce.

Conversely, Conifer features tactile variations that mirror nature’s contours, from receding shorelines to forest edges. Handcrafted in wool and silk, the rug’s edges appear to shimmer with a golden sheen. To achieve this, the design team was very intentional on the placement of the fibers.

“We chose Chinese silk for the hand-drawn border of Conifer specifically for the way it catches the light—so that the edges appear to glow as though touched by the sun,” explains Massouh.

And finally, Santal is a gorgeous linear pattern inspired by the languid movement of water over stone and the grain of weathered wood. (Picture ancient trees’ growth rings.)

All in all, Sierra is an extremely well-thought-out collection that functions as far more than decorative art. It captures the texture, rhythm, and quiet beauty of the Sierra Nevada, bringing a sense of the outdoors inside. ⬥
