Experiential art is a term that often gets thrown around for new and novel projects, but a new excursion at Wyndham Grand Barbados allows travelers to truly experience the island through art. "Treasures of the Tide," an immersive art experience by artist Sheena Rose, brings guests into the island's natural environment while celebrating its culture and creativity.
Born and raised in Barbados—and a 2022 recipient of the country's Prime Minister's Award for Culture—Sheena guides guests along the shoreline in order to connect with the land. “I grew up going to the beach [in Saint Philip, Barbados], where we would collect any interesting items from the shore," Sheena says. "When curating this experience, I wanted participants to share the same joy that I get from this nostalgic activity."
The experience begins at sunrise with stretching and breathwork to connect individuals with the environment. Then, as they begin to walk along the shore and collect what the tide has brought in, Sheena encourages participants to share their personal journeys to connect on a deeper level. Participants walk among locals enjoying the shore in a similar way, which will further connect them to the land and its people.
Once they've gathered materials from the shore, Sheena shares personal stories and walks guests through her artistic journey as they create keepsakes with their collected treasures.
"It’s really about the process—not the end results," Sheena says. "My goal is for everyone to enjoy the process, to be playful and collect memories that will last a lifetime."
This art experience is more than a way to gain a souvenir from Barbados. "'Treasures of the Tide' was created to give guests a deeper connection to Barbados beyond the traditional resort experience," says Petra Roach of Wyndham Grand Barbados. "Partnering with local artist Sheena Rose allowed us to bring authentic storytelling, creativity, and community into the guest journey. By walking the shoreline that shaped her childhood and transforming what the tide leaves behind into keepsakes, visitors experience the island through art, reflection, and a genuine sense of place.”
"Treasures of the Tide" allows guests to reflect on Barbados's heritage while engaging with one of the island's most celebrated artists. What's more experiential than that?
"Treasures of the Tide" is $150 per couple at Wyndham Grand Barbados.
