The Wizard Behind Ralph Lauren Stores Goes Solo

For decades, Alfredo Paredes was the wizard behind the curtain. As the creative force shaping Ralph Lauren's legendary retail environments, he built worlds that transported shoppers somewhere else entirely. Now, he's stepped out from behind the curtain to create an Emerald City of his own.

The designer's first brick-and-mortar store has opened in Hudson, New York, and it's exactly what you'd hope: less showroom, more beautifully layered home. His furniture mingles with vintage finds, art, rugs, pottery, and collected objects, creating the feeling that someone fascinating actually lives there.

The opening marks a full-circle moment for Alfredo. After reclaiming ownership of his furniture collection, he knew a retail space was the inevitable next step. Hudson—with its creative energy, historic architecture, and thriving antiques scene—felt like the natural choice.

If there was one question surrounding the store, it was whether Alfredo would distance himself from his Ralph Lauren years. The answer? Not entirely. Alfredo brought one core philosophy with him. "The foundational thing I carried forward is that great retail is about storytelling first and selling second," he says. The difference now that he's calling the shots? The only filter is his own taste and obsessions.

That shift has been equal parts liberating and daunting. "When your name is on the door, it raises the stakes," he says. "Everything in that space is an expression of who I am and what I believe in right now." Which, judging by the store, reflects a beautiful patina and the impeccable craftsmanship for which Alfredo is known. Quite frankly, it makes everyone immediately want to redecorate.

It's also why this boutique reaches far beyond furniture. It's an edit of everything Alfredo loves right now, not just the pieces he designs himself. As he puts it, "I want people to walk in and immediately feel like there's something to find, something to look at more closely, something that surprises them a little." The store also serves as a Farrow & Ball dealer, with upcoming collaborations from Kravet Couture and Patterson Flynn adding even more to look forward to.

"I've always believed that retail should feel immersive, almost cinematic," Alfredo says. Well then, mission accomplished. Whether you're visiting Hudson for a sourcing trip or a weekend escape, Alfredo Paredes Studio offers a glimpse into what happens when one of retail's greatest storytellers finally gets to write his own narrative and rule the land of Oz. Consider this your invitation to follow the yellow brick road to Hudson. ⬥
